Peer-review refers to the process whereby an article is reviewed by a panel of so-called peers in a specific field prior to it's publication. It is a process of self-regulation within a specific field such as medicine or law. This way the work is scrutinized by a panel of experts and then deemed worthy of the distinction. It is thought that the peer-review helps meet academic standards in each field.
