Finding the NAICS for an Industry
 

Options:

  • Go to the NAICS website 
    1. Enter a keyword search
  • First Research Database
     
    1. From the library homepage, click on Databases, then under “Databases by Subject” click on Business and Leadership
    2. Under the Electronic Resources tab, select Industry Research
    3. Click on First Research
    4. Do a simple keyword search or browse the industries
    5. Choose the most relevant industry description
    6. The NAICS and SIC codes will appear at the top of page.
  • Reference USA for International Companies
     
    1. From the library homepage, click on Databases, then under “Databases by Subject” click on Business and Leadership
    2. Under the Electronic Resources tab, select Industry Research
    3. Click on Reference USA
    4. Click on OneSource
    5. Do a simple keyword search under "Industries"
    6. Choose the most relevant industry description
    7. the matching NAICS code is to the left.
  • Reference USA for U.S. Companies
     
    1. From the library homepage, click on Databases, then under “Databases by Subject” click on Business and Leadership
    2. Under the Electronic Resources tab, select Industry Research
    3. Click on Reference USA
    4. Click on U.S. Businesses
    5. Search on a company that you are either researching or that you would believe to be competitor to your fictional company
    6. Choose the correct company from the results list
    7. Scroll down to the Industry Profile
    8. Choose the most relevant NAICS code

Remember, most companies have more than one relevant NAICS code. You may need to look at more than one for your research.
