An in-person interview is often called a personal communication.

For APA

Personal Communication: For interviews, letters, e-mails, and other person-to-person communication, cite the communicator's name, the fact that it was personal communication, and the date of the communication. Do not include personal communication in the reference list.

Parenthetical citation: (E. Robbins, personal communication, January 4, 2001).

Narrative citation: E. Robbins also claimed that many of her students had difficulties with APA style (personal communication, January 4, 2001).

For MLA

Personal interviews refer to those interviews that you conduct yourself:

  • List the interview by the name of the interviewee.
  • Include the descriptor Personal interview and the date of the interview.

Purdue, Pete. Personal interview. 1 Dec. 2000.

The style of citation may change if it is an interview you heard on the radio, found on a website, or conducted via email.
