Hanging indents happen in the bibliography in APA and MLA citation styles.  Each entry has a hanging indent that looks like this:

To create a hanging indent in Word for Windows:

  1. Put your cursor where you want to indent your paragraph or citation.
  2. In the Menu, or Ribbon, find the paragraph section.
  3. In the lower right corner of the Paragraph section click on the little icon (it looks like the corner of a box with an arrow) to open the Paragraph dialog box.
  4. Under the "Indents and Spacing" tab find the Indents section and under "Special" choose "Hanging" and click on "OK".
