You cite something when writing a paper when you need to give credit.  You may be quoting, paraphrasing, or using data that is based on someone else's work.

An in-text citation usually ends a section that is someone else's original work.  The in-text citation then refers the reader to your bibliography where the they can then see where you got the information.
